Concussion & Head Injury

A concussion is a type of brain injury that can occur after a bump, blow, fall, collision, or other impact to the head or body.

Possible signs and symptoms may include:

• Headache or pressure in the head
• Dizziness or balance problems
• Nausea or vomiting
• Blurred vision
• Sensitivity to light or noise
• Confusion or difficulty concentrating
• Memory problems
• Feeling foggy, slowed down, or unusually tired
• Changes in mood or behavior

A participant does not need to lose consciousness to have a concussion.

If a Concussion Is Suspected

If Harry's Hoops suspects that a participant may have sustained a concussion or significant head injury:

• The participant will be removed from basketball activity immediately.
• The participant will not return to play during the same session, even if symptoms improve.
• A parent or guardian will be notified.
• The participant should be evaluated by an appropriate healthcare provider.
• When required, the participant must provide appropriate written medical clearance before returning to Harry's Hoops activities.

When there is uncertainty, Harry's Hoops will prioritize the participant's safety.

When in doubt, sit it out.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest

Sudden cardiac arrest is a serious medical emergency involving an unexpected problem with the heart's normal function.

Warning signs during physical activity may include:

• Fainting or unexplained loss of consciousness
• Chest pain or discomfort
• Unusual difficulty breathing
• Significant dizziness or lightheadedness
• Racing or abnormal heartbeat
• Sudden collapse

These symptoms should not be ignored.

If a participant experiences concerning symptoms, Harry's Hoops may immediately remove the participant from activity and seek emergency medical assistance when appropriate.

If a participant suddenly collapses or becomes unresponsive, Harry's Hoops will call 911, initiate appropriate emergency response procedures, and use an available Automated External Defibrillator (AED) when appropriate.

Parent/Guardian Acknowledgment

By completing registration, I acknowledge that I have reviewed the Harry's Hoops Concussion, Head Injury & Sudden Cardiac Arrest Safety information.

I understand that:

• My child will be removed from participation if a concussion or significant head injury is suspected.
• My child will not be permitted to return to basketball during the same session following a suspected concussion.
• Harry's Hoops may require written medical clearance before my child returns to participation.
• I am responsible for informing Harry's Hoops of any medical restrictions or healthcare-provider recommendations affecting my child's ability to participate safely.
• I understand the warning signs associated with concussion, head injury, and sudden cardiac arrest and agree to notify Harry's Hoops of any relevant health or safety concerns involving my child.
